This Applied Anatomy & Movement Foundations module expands upon traditional anatomy education by bridging structure and movement.
While most anatomy courses focus on identifying muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments, this module teaches students how those structures actually function in real movement. Students will learn how the body organizes motion through the three anatomical planes and how to accurately describe and observe joint actions across all major joints.
This course provides a clear framework for understanding movement as it relates to yoga, strength training, Pilates, and everyday life, giving future teachers the language and confidence to cue more effectively, recognize compensations, and adapt poses safely for diverse bodies.
By the end of this module, anatomy is no longer abstract — it becomes practical, observable, and teachable.
Key Topics:
1. Movement Planes & How the Body Moves in Space
Students will learn how all human movement is organized through three primary anatomical planes:
● Sagittal Plane – flexion and extension
● Frontal (Coronal) Plane – abduction, adduction, and lateral movement
● Transverse Plane – rotation and anti-rotation
You’ll explore how different movement practices emphasize these planes differently and why training across all three is essential for resilience, balance, and long-term joint health.
2. Joint Actions & Movement Language
Students will learn the universal language used to describe movement across all disciplines, including:
● Flexion and extension
● Abduction and adduction
● Internal and external rotation
These concepts are applied to all major joints, including:
● Spine
● Shoulders
● Hips
● Knees
● Ankles and feet
This section demystifies movement terminology and helps students move away from vague cues toward clear, precise instruction.
3. Applied Movement Across Practices
Students will explore how movement anatomy applies differently across:
● Yoga
● Strength training
● Pilates
● Everyday movement
You’ll learn why no single practice covers all movement demands and how understanding movement anatomy allows teachers to adapt poses and sequences intelligently.
4. Movement Observation & Teaching Application
This course emphasizes seeing movement, not just performing it.
Students will practice:
● Identifying movement planes in real time
● Recognizing primary joint actions in poses and exercises
● Spotting common compensations
● Improving cueing clarity and safety
This section directly supports injury prevention and teaching confidence.
Course Learning Outcomes:
● Understand how the body organizes movement through the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes
● Accurately identify and name joint actions across all major joints
● Apply movement anatomy principles to yoga poses and sequences
● Observe movement more clearly and recognize common compensations
● Cue poses with greater precision, clarity, and confidence
● Understand how yoga, strength training, and Pilates differ from a movement perspective
● Teach with a deeper appreciation for joint health, balance, and long-term sustainability
